How to Build an Animal House

To build a pet shelter, you need to plan and build the structure to create a safe, warm place for an animal. If you do it right, you can make your pet happy, and safe.

Steps

  1. 1
Plan the size for the shelter. Have enough space so the animal can stand, turn around, and lay down comfortably inside, but have it small enough so it is not like a big pen. Be sure to have specific measurements available.
  2. 2
Gather the supplies and build the shelter. Make sure there are no drafts and if it is going to be outside, it would be useful to have it raised, around 1 1/2 inches at least.
  3. 3
Choose a spot for the shelter and add accessories. Add a bed (it can be out of straw, hay, grass, or a dog bed), water bowl, heater, etc. and place it down in a spot where it can be used easily.
  4. 4
Sit back and watch your pet enjoy the shelter! The wonderful things about these shelters is that it is made from the heart, and your pet should love it!

TIPS

Always have fresh water available for your pet.

  • Paint the shelter to add a touch of personality and to customize it to fit your yard.
  • Raise the shelter at least 1 1/2 inches to keep the shelter off the cold ground.
  • Waterproof the wood if it is going to be used outside.

Warnings

  • If you don't waterproof your wood, it could wear away over time.
  • Make sure there are no sharp edges or nails sticking out in which your pet can hurt themselves on.
